Crystal Care Guide 101
Crystals act like energetic sponges, absorbing vibes from their surroundings and anyone who handles them. To keep your collection vibrant and powerful, you need to regularly clear out that stagnant energy and protect them from physical damage.
First, let's talk about energetic cleansing, which resets a crystal back to its natural baseline. You can easily do this by placing your crystals on a windowsill overnight during a Full Moon, or by passing them through the smoke of sage or incense for 30 seconds. Sound waves from a singing bowl will also instantly shake loose stuck energy. However, the absolute safest method is using Selenite—a self-cleansing mineral. Simply rest your other crystals on a Selenite charging plate or next to a Selenite tower for 4 to 24 hours and let it do the work for you.
Beyond the energetic reset, you also need to know the physical rules of crystal safety. Many stones look tough but are actually soft, water-soluble, or prone to sun fading. A great beginner rule of thumb for water safety is to skip the "-ite" stones: if a crystal's name ends in "-ite," keep it dry. While Quartz varieties (Clear, Rose, Amethyst), Jasper, and Black Obsidian are perfectly safe to wash, water will literally dissolve Selenite, cause iron-heavy Pyrite to rust, degrade Fluorite, and cause Malachite to crack and release toxic fumes.
Sunlight is another hidden danger. Direct, prolonged UV rays act like bleach on certain gemstones, meaning you should keep Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Fluorite, and Citrine off sunny windowsills, or their vibrant colors will fade to gray over time.
To keep it simple, you don't need a strict calendar to maintain your collection. Just give your stones a quick refresh when they are brand new to clear the energy of previous handlers, after a stressful week, or once a month under the Full Moon. With just a little intentional care, your crystals will stay beautiful and high-vibe for years to come!
